when you log on to any website, you do not just stay in the home page or in one web page for such a long period of time. chances are you would be clicking on hyperlinks here and there, anticipating what great things and valuable information is waiting for you at the other end as you click on the links. when they make a website, excellent web designers would make use of a sensible navigational scheme that would be good in directing website visitors where they would want to go, and at the same time, would likewise be good in guiding them back to whichever sites or pages they came from, should they have any further need for information found in previously opened pages. of course you have your browser’s back button for that, but a good navigational scheme thinks ahead and presumes that some information and links tend to be more useful and more valuable than others. a sensible navigational scheme provides both instruction and direction – good guidance as to where you are being led and where you might just want to get back or be refreshed on.
an excellent navigational scheme would be one that would clearly be of guidance – none of the vagueness and/ or ambiguity that might mislead website visitors and cost them several – but very precious – minutes. part of the popularity of web technology is the ability to deliver valuable information in a matter of minutes, or even seconds.
